Barbershops and Salons Prove Fruitful Grounds for Addressing Hypertension Rates in the Black Community

The Colorado Black Health Collaborative’s Black Barbershop and Salon Health Outreach Program (BBSHOP) was recently featured by the CU Anschutz Colorado School of Public Health, highlighting the program’s impact on hypertension rates in the Black community.

Black adults experience the highest rates of high blood pressure at approximately 59%, significantly outpacing other groups. In Colorado, while the rate is lower at around 34%, it remains the highest among all demographic groups in the state.

CBHC’s BBSHOP initiative meets community members where they are — in local barbershops and salons in Denver and Aurora — to conduct free blood pressure screenings, distribute educational materials, provide free blood pressure cuffs, and connect patients with primary care resources.
